The e-learning programmes run by NOUN and three other federal universities in the country have been approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC), the body overseeing the university education in the country.
The commission in its weekly bulletin also listed University of Maiduguri, Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto and University of Uyo in Akwa Ibom as the only quartet recognised by NUC to run the e-learning programmes for Nigerians.
This was sequel to the introduction of Nigerian universities e-learning programme by the commission as the four universities were selected to serve as the pilot institutions for the innovation.
NUC’s information and public relations director, Ibrahim Yakasai said with this development, no Nigerian university is allowed to undertake the programmes directly or through affiliation with any foreign university, apart from the listed ones.
Consequently, the commission had blacklisted 57 “illegal universities” in Nigeria, including those that award degrees through affiliation with foreign institutions.
The bulletin said: “the commission wishes to use this medium to allay fears and doubts concerning the legitimacy or NUC endorsement of the Nigerian Universities e-Learning Programme.
“This is one of the avenues that the National Universities Commission is exploring to increase access to university education without compromising the quality,” it said.
The commission then advised students currently running the programmes “to continue to pursue their studies without fear and prospective applicants are encouraged to enrol.
“Concerned parents, guardians, students and the general public may contact the commission for further clarification on the programme.”
