The newly created in-house university portal is fast stabilising and has in the first three months of its official launch, recorded about 14,000 fresh admissions from applicants, the Vice-Chancellor said.

Prof Abdalla Uba Adamu said, while playing host to the management of an online newspaper, DAILY NIGERIAN led by its publisher, Ja’afar Ja’afar, that it was unprecedented and the first time for the university to record up to that number during any of the previous admissions.

He said the university could not even hold a matriculation exercise for its fresh students the previous year when outsiders were still managing the portal, due to the meager size.

As such, the VC said, the cancellation of the outsourcing contracts were for the better in many fronts as it invests confidence in the university staff, save billions of money, own and managed students information and records amongst many other positives.

While berating some sponsored advertorials in the media against the decision, the VC told the visiting team that “right now we are under attacks from people who do not want the independent way we are charting the university.

“The issue that our portal is down is just a propaganda by people who no longer benefit from the system. We are receiving attacks from unpatriotic Nigerians, because we are implementing the change mantra of this administration.”

Prof Adamu said it was not overstatement to describe NOUN as the best university in the country, saying “no university is having about 400,000 students. No university can graduate over 12,000 students at a go.No university can have students from A-Z, that is, Abia to Zamfara.”

He disclosed that the management has also introduced a “university field” whereby students would henceforth be having a period of study before starting their examinations, against the previous era under the contractors of the portal who continue to register fresh students until the eve of examinations.

On his part, the registrar of the university, Mr Felix Edoka said the attacks on some decisions of the management are coming from section of Nigerians who are averse to change despite its attendants benefits.

He said the VC is putting the university on a sound footing for its future independence and sustenance and therefore urged the DAILY NIGERIAN team to collaborate with the university in projecting the true motives behind the reforms in NOUN.

Earlier in his remarks, the publisher, Malam Ja’afar Ja’afar told the VC that their visit was to acquaint the management of their fast progress since coming to the business and expressed readiness for any collaboration with the university in further disseminating the gospel of ODL model to young Nigerians.

He said the online newspaper has within the last one year broke high profile stories in the country and said the number of followers to their social media pages has keep on surging by the day, which signals their acceptance by Nigerians.
