Prof. Asha Singh Kanwar delivering her lecture in Abuja
The first edition of NOUN's Distinguished Lecture Series on Open and Distance Learning (ODL) was addressed by the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), Professor Asha Singh Kanwar, in Abuja recently.
The lecture, which took place the auditorium of the National Universities Commission (NUC) in Maitama, had as it theme; "Can Open and Distance Learning Reach the Unreached? Lessons from the Commonwealth''.
The lecture series, aimed to proffer solutions to tbe challenges bedeviling access to higher education tn the world, especially the developing world, was organized in collaboration with the COL, with a view to deriving lessons from the member countries of the Commonwealth of Nations.
In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor of the NOUN, Professor Abdallah Uba Adamu, said the lecture series, which is going to be held annually, was borne out of the need to train and refresh stakeholders in the sector.
Adamu said the challenge facing higher education was global, but stressed that Africans were at the receiving end of the negative impact of the trend, making it imperative to lunch the lecture initiative.

He said, National Open University of Nigeria has institutes its public lecture series which will be a platform where professional stakeholders will use to share with us their various experiences and new idea in open and distance education in particular, and in higher education in general.
